GRANITE GAMES RE-CAP / “DASH” WOD 6/4/19

I have coached in many large scale CrossFit events including the CrossFit Games. However, nothing quite matched my experience over the weekend at the Granite Games. We had 2 teams representing Precision and one teen athlete. With Regionals being a thing of the past we decided to make this event our Sanctioned event of the season. We put our best pro team together that we could assemble in Chelsey Grigsby, Kristin Seckar, Dane Mcloughlin, and Hunter McIntyre.

The stakes were high with only one spot to the Games on the table as opposed to Regionals which had 5. The team pushed, clawed, fought, bled, succeeded, and failed together. Each team was stacked with Games talent and because of this mistakes, no matter how small, became catastrophic. We made just a few too many. We showed major homerun potential on several occasions but unfortunately couldn’t close out the workout to seal the deal. This is why we finished 12th out 40. Now, that being said. Are we good? Darn straight we are. We pushed super teams to the max to beat us. At the end of the competition a group of 4 great athletes that only had 5 real practices together walked off the competition floor a Team. They had inside jokes, complete trust in each other, and had figured out what motivated one another. To me that’s a victory, and when they choose to compete again together. They will be a scary foe because it’s easy to beat 4 individual’s. However, it’s hard to beat a team! This takes me to our Team of 3 that consisted of Jess Dabs, Maddy Buddingh, and Laci Knight.

This team formed just 2 weeks before the event. They came together in Minnesota having never trained as a team together. They formed a bond. Learned how to work together and spent 2 days in the top 3. They battled against a team all weekend with 3 Masters Games athletes on it. They executed and were almost perfect. In reality, what kept them off the podium was a Team sprint relay, one by one running a 200 yard sprint. Speed literally kept them off the podium. Not CrossFit ability. That’s important. They were a top 3 team CrossFit wise but lack of sprint speed put them in 7th overall in a feild of more then 50 teams. Last but certainly not least… Hannah Hall.

In what could possibly be her last event as a Teenager, Hannah had an interesting weekend. I’m not going to sugar coat it. Hannah got off to a rough start. After taking 2nd in her first event. She went on to take several low finishes all of which that shook her confidence. As a coach I began to find frustration in myself with trying to find ways to bring the best out of Hannah. The whole pro team spoke to her. Mom and Dad gave her words of encouragement. I pulled out every trick I could think of to snap her out of her funk. However, in the end it was Hannah that chose to believe in herself. When all was said and done. Hannah stringed off a 5th, 4th, and 2nd place finish to close out her weekend. She went from last place in the middle of day 2 to 6th place by the end of the competition. Yet… in the end. We won. We found a way to unlock Hannah’s full potential. The next time you see Hannah Hall on that competition floor it’s going to be scary because now she knows what she’s capable of. I had two judges pull me a side to compliment Hannah on her abilities yesterday. Her future is brighter now then ever. Look out CrossFit world.

In closing… I couldn’t be more proud of Team Precision. We represented you all. We proved that we aren’t just some of the best in California but some of the best in the world this weekend. A 12th, 7th, and 6th place finish out 40+ competitors is impressive. We’ll see you at the next one.
